Medication Details - Understanding How Medication Queries Work in the Report:
The dialysis survey report searches for specific medications in a patient's prescription records using predefined drug names. These names often include wildcard characters like %, which allow for more flexible matching. However, the system only returns ON for medications that are either in a Current or New status in the patient's medication history. As you look through the list of medications included in the query for this report (noted below), here’s how it works:
Single Medication Match (e.g., Benazepril%): The system will search for any prescription that contains "Benazepril" in the name, but only if the prescription is either Current or New. This could match any formulation of the medication, such as Benazepril by itself or a combination like Benazepril Hydrochlorothiazide. Essentially, it will find anything that starts with "Benazepril" and display the status for the related drug class as ON.
Combination Medication Match (e.g., Amlodipine%Benazepril%): In this case, the system is looking for a specific combination of two medications, Amlodipine and Benazepril. It will only return ON if the patient has a prescription that includes both drug names, and if that prescription is either Current or New (status code 2 or 5). Not all drugs are configured to return combination drug names - you will need to look at the Specified Drug name list below and where you see the wildcard indicator % in the center of a drug name then the search is checking for that combination.
What the Results Mean:
If a patient has a Current or New prescription that includes Benazepril as part of their treatment, the system will return "ON" under the ACE Inhibitor category if the prescription name includes "Benazepril%" (such as Benazepril or Benazepril Hydrochlorothiazide).
If the patient is prescribed a combination drug like Amlodipine Benazepril, it will only return "ON" if the prescription is Current or New, and if both components are found in the prescription name (Amlodipine%Benazepril%).
If the patient is not prescribed any of the specified drugs or the prescription status is other the Current or New then the drug class would return an "off" in the drug class column for that patient.
By using these wildcard characters and prescription status filters, the system captures both individual and combination medications against the patient’s medication history and returns ON when they are prescribed and in the status of Current or New.
