Electronic Prescriptions FAQ

The EMR uses the First Databank, hereafter referred to as FDB, MedKnowledge drug database as our source of medications data. iSalus applies weekly updates to the drug knowledge base. FDB works directly with drug manufacturers to keep the drug database information up-to-date.

Q.  Why can I no longer find a drug the pharmacy still has to prescribe?

A. It is not uncommon for an NDC to be discontinued by the manufacturer and still be available for sale at the pharmacy through the product's expiration date present on the label. To prescribe a discontinued drug, prescribers must use the print button as all electronic prescriptions require an active NDC.

Q. Why is the medication I am prescribing missing an NDC?

A. It is not uncommon for an NDC to be discontinued by the manufacturer and still be available for sale at the pharmacy through the product's expiration date present on the label. To prescribe a discontinued drug without an NDC, prescribers must use the print button as all electronic prescriptions require an active NDC.
